Bicol Sanitarium

       It was Governor General Leonard Wood's personal devotion to the cause of Leprosy patients that intensified the campaign to control the disease thru the creation of colonies and treatment stations. On September 19, 1929 by virtue of Act 1711 of the Philippine Commission, the facility was established initially as Bicol Treatment Station located at Reagan Barracks, Legazpi City with 40 patients and three staff headed by Dr. Mariano Carreon.

       The Act signed by Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte last October 30, 2018 shall provide for the upgrading of the existing healthcare services and increase in bed capacity for the general services with specialized care for the ageing population and continue to treat cases of Leprosy for the Bicol region. The Act also includes the transfer and operation of the Bicol Treatment Station located in Legazpi City to BRGHGMC. Promulgation for the expansion is now being coordinated with the Department of Health Facilities Development Bureau, the Civil Service Commission, and the Department of Budget and Management, which will appropriate funding and manpower commensurate to its service capability.

Star Award

        Bicol Sanitarium received the 2018 DOH Hospital Star Award for being one of the Best Level 1 Hospitals in the country. The award was given to the hospital in acknowledgement of its efforts in upholding high standards of quality and best practices in the delivery of health service towards achieving universal health care.

Bicol Sanitarium receives Best Rapid TB Diagnostic Laboratory (RTDL) Implementer Award
         The DOH-Center for Health Development-Bicol presented Bicol Sanitarium with the Best Rapid Tuberculosis Diagnostic Laboratory (RTDL) Implementer Award and ₱150,000.00 cash during the Salud Bikolnon Awarding Ceremony last December 7, 2018 in Legazpi City.
       The Salud Bikolnon Awards is spearheaded by the DOH-Center for Health Development - Bicol, it is an annual event that gives recognition and acknowledgement to the exceptional practices in health governance of the various agencies, hospitals, Local Government Units and other health partners in the region.

BS Inaugurates its New General Service Ward
The Inauguration and blessing ceremony of the new 32-bed General Service Ward of Bicol Sanitarium was held on July 07, 2017. The prayer service and blessing was conducted by Rev. Fr. Noli Montaña, Parish Priest of Barcelonita, Cabusao, Camarines Sur. It was participated by BS Employees headed by Dr. Edgardo R. Sarmiento.

ISO QMS Certification Recognition by the Government Quality Management Committee
Pursuant to the objectives of E.O. No. 605 s. 2007, the Government Quality Management Committee awarded Bicol Sanitarium and other government agencies which have established quality Management System in conformity with ISO 9001 standards and the applicable government QMS standards.The recognition ceremony was held on November 10,2016 at Landbank of the Philippines, Malate, Manila.

Best Smoke-Free Government Agency 2016 Finalist

On October 27, 2016, Bicol Sanitarium was awarded with Certificate of Recognition as a Finalist in the 2016 Search for Best Smoke-Free Government Agency and  for outstanding contribution to the Civil Service Commission's advocacy for a smoke-free bureaucracy through its support and compliance with the provisions of CSC MC. No. 17 series of 2009.
